Weymouth has recently seen a rapid expansion of the number of facilities for on street recycling. In order to complement the recycling bins that are found on the high street, 20 can crushers have been installed in areas that see particularly high footfall. The crushers are designed to make recycling accessible, convenient and easy, and will make recycling cans simple for passers-by.
It is thought that the population of the town is going to see a great deal more tourists in the near future and therefore the council thought it was a good idea to install better recycling facilities. The crushers are made by the company Every Can Counts and along with the installation of these crushers there is going to be a promotional campaign in order to raise awareness.
Posters have been designed in several languages are going to make an appearance and easily been designed by children in local schools. The posters are going to be featured on the collection vehicles as well as recycling banks around the area. It is also expected that these posters are going to appear on the buses in the town. All of the posters are going to revolve around the theme that when recycling, ‘every can counts.’
The 20 can crushers are not going to be present permanently, and after the summer passes and the tourism declines, 10 of them are going to be used elsewhere. It is expected that the remaining 10 are going to remain will be plenty for the limited number of people who visit the town in the cooler months.
It is thought that these can crushers are going to help the council reach their recycling target rate which has been set at 60 percent. This is in line with the waste strategy that has been implemented in the rest of Dorset.
