Knowaste is about to open a recycling plant that is the first of its kind in the UK. The plant is going to be recycling babies nappies as well as other products that absorb human waste – such as feminine hygiene and incontinence products. Knowaste is already a specialist in recycling these kinds of materials which, once sterilised and processed, can be used to make other products, such as plastic components.
The first site they are opening is located in West Bromwich and chief executive of the company is Roy Brown who has said, “This site is the first of a £25 million investment. Once we have completed this investment we will be handling around one fifth of waste hygiene products a year. This will mean that over 100,000 tonnes less greenhouse gas will be emitted every year.
“Unfortunately, most of the waste at the moment is just going to landfill, but we have established relationships with some of the leading waste collection agencies in the area to ensure that we can reduce this amount. Currently most of what we collect is commercial waste, but we are working with councils to expand this to domestic collection as well.”
