Virgin Atlantic recycling at 33,000ft

By Alan Leave a Comment

Virgin Atlantic was recently criticized by environmentalists for their plans to operate UK domestic flights, but the nature’s protectors will be glad to know that the company is rapidly developing its recycling strategy.

The airline recently announced that they are one of the many companies to start making new fabrics from recycle plastic bottles. The newest thing to be made with recycled materials is the amenity kits which are made of 100% recycled materials.

These amenity kits contain socks, eyeshades, toothbrush, a travel wallet and earplugs and all this items are re-usable and made of recycled materials. Customers of the Premium Economy and Upper Class will be the first to take advantage of the new amenity kits which the company has been developing and researching for almost 6 months.

The company released additional information about the new amenity kits. For example, the cases are made of recycled PET material. This is basically plastic bottles which have been recycled and turned into workable yawn which is 90% more eco-friendly than traditional nylon.

The companies developing the PET material have a lot of work as more and more companies want to take advantage of this new material and replace the traditional nylon. One of the most notable examples for this is the sportswear company Nike. During the past several years they released special series of football shirts made of recycled plastic bottles.

The company plans to recycle over four million bottles a year in order to produce the necessary kids. The amenity kits which aren’t used by customers will be re-used or recycled by MNH Sustainable Cabin Services, the airline’s recycling contractor. The company also revealed that they are not planning to provide the new amenity kits to economy customers, but they confirmed that the bags used by economy clients are made of recycled plastic.
