Everyone knows about recycling but when you can actually reuse something without having to recycle that is even better. The best way of doing this is to make use of the countless charity shops that are around. Then you are not only doing your bit for the environment but you are contributing to a good cause as well.
There is a campaign starting in May that will be promoting this in towns across Somerset. There are already posters up for the ‘Choose Charity Shops’ campaign encouraging people to take their unwanted goods into a charity shop instead of just throwing them out.
We all probably have lots of things in our homes that are perfectly usable but that we ourselves just don’t use anymore. It could be books, clothes or anything that someone else could put to good use. Also, while we are in the shop, dropping of our unwanted goods, maybe we might see something that we could use. Then we have contributed twice to a good cause.
The charity shops in Somerset are stressing that the gifts must still be in usable condition. They don’t, after all, want our old rubbish that is no use to anyone. They also ask that for any larger items such as furniture or large electrical goods, it is a good idea to call ahead so that they are prepared or so that they can say if they want it or not. For a lot of these larger items there are the furniture reuse charities in Mendip.
The shops also suggest that we don’t just dump the items outside if the shop is closed. This is just too inviting for thieves and also the goods could be damaged by the weather. If anyone requires more information on waste it can be found at the Somerset Waste Partnership.
