Mahatma Gandhi once said “You must be the change you want to see in the world.
The Indian political and spiritual leader was placing the emphasis on the word ‘be’ here. What the great man was telling us is that it isn’t enough to merely yearn for change, or to say that things ‘should’ be so – or to lobby for political change, or even to take public office to effect changes that we’d like to see in society.
Instead, he was saying that the most important step we can take is to be the change we want to see. To live as we would wish others did – instead of thinking about it or talking about it.
The trouble is – this is hard, and we aren’t the people he would have us be.
Nevertheless, we should all strive to live as we would have the rest of the world live and for many of us in the modern world that means living in an environmentally sustainable way.
So we do things like re-cycle, make informed consumer choices about the products we buy – and where else we put our money.
But perhaps the biggest impact most of us make at an individual level is in our motoring habits. Thankfully, there are an ever-increasing number of new car offers that enable us to truly be the change we would like to see.
There are more electric cars than ever now coming onto the market and each technological leap forward makes them more practicable for families.
Meanwhile, the hybrid car makes and models area also making inroads. Each set of new data reveal massive increases in the numbers of hybrids and other eco-friendly vehicles being sold. Overall, though, they remain at a low percentage (under 2% of all new car sales). But that’s changing as more and more of us try to be greener.
